Leave your inhibitions at home when you head to Mardi Gras in Tenerife. The second-largest carnival in the world, after Rio de Janeiro's, it's a celebration of decadence, revelry and excessive abandon. Costumes, planned months ahead, are deliberately impudent and outrageous, with cross-dressing a favorite choice. Held just before Lent each year in February or March, the 11 days of hedonistic festivities revolve around the capital Santa Cruz, which is twinned with Rio in Brazil. But the whole of this Spanish island, off the coast of Africa, explodes into party mode as almost a million people fill the streets to parade, sing and dance.
